DC Government Looks to Social Media

August 27, 2008 ·

I saw a really interesting post this morning about a local DC Government agency that is reaching out and starting to use social media to reach its audience. The DC Department of Community and Regulatory Affairs has started a blog called thisshouldbeillegal.com to address Collegiate Off Campus Housing Safety while students attend school in the District.  The site is looking to provide a central location where you can request free services that can make your life safer if you live off-campus. We also want to make the information available where you are. We have created a Facebook group so you can get immediate online and mobile updates. We’re also on Twitter so you can ask questions and post links from wherever you are. It is a great service they are providing to the off campus student population... [Read the full story]

CrossMine, DC’s Directory of Technology Ventures

July 28, 2008 ·

At the Twin Tech event a couple of weeks back, I met a lot of new people doing some interesting things in the technology space here in the DC region.  One of them was Bob Nelson of CrossMine. I got a chance to look at CrossMine to see what it is all about and I will say, I am pretty impressed.  CrossMine is a fairly extensive database of technology ventures in the local DC region.  It also has listings of local Venture firms and their holdings, as well as a nice listing of jobs the companies participating have listed.  According to CrossMine The Washington, D.C. region is home to 500+ venture capital funded companies as well as 5000+ angel funded and 20,000+ privately held technology ventures. DC, Maryland, and Virginia are also home to 472,000 technology workers, 8.5% of the private sector... [Read the full story]

Social Networking

Centralized vs Decentalized

March 31, 2008 ·

I have written a post before on FriendFeed, the social media aggregator if you will.  I didn't really get it then and I still do not now.  To me it seems like a bit of social media overload.  Many bloggers I think have come to the same conclusion.  Anyway, I came across a post my Michael Arrington this morning referencing a post by Loic Le Muer on the decentralization of our social networks.   In his post, Loic argues that our social presence used to be very centralized.  Basically it revolved around our blogs, if one wrote a blog.  Whereas now, that presence has been scattered and diluted all across that so called "series of tubes".(Sorry I couldn't help but throw this in somewhere, it is too damned funny).  We post updates on... [Read the full story]

Twitterwhore Shirts for Everyone !

June 30, 2008 ·

Well it would seem that the DC area has its newest entrepeneur in its midst. Everyones good friend and Jonnys ParTay producer extraodinaire, Scott Stead, has gone and launched a new web site pimping out his brand new product, Twitterwhore tshirts. This enterprising young fellow saw fit to buy the twitterwhore.com domain name some time back and has finally made time to capitalize on the Twitter phenomena. I mean how many times have you met someone at a social media gathering and introduce each other by your twitter names ? Happens to me a lot … Well now with your very own Twitterhore tshirt, you will gain followers by the boatload. Now if the damned service would only stay up long eough for them to get to a computer and follow you … So I want everyone to head over an support... [Read the full story]

MyDropBin: Beta Update

May 24, 2008 ·

Things have been going fairly well with the testing of the system.  It is sometimes hard to get people engaged in testing it all out.  I find I am like that as well.  An initial burst of activity after sign up and then it tails off. But I did get some good feedback from what has been done so far.  I thinkk the one major change I incorporated was to the UI, or user interface.  I am no designer, by any stretch.  But I tried to take some feedback and open things up a bit.  I took out a couple of elements, one being the meta-data pane, which form what I heard think confused people more than it really helped. I will admit, having the code outsourced has been a bit of a challenge, especially recently as I try to tie up all the loose ends.  The main developer on the project that was working... [Read the full story]
