Twitter as a Disaster Communications Tool

by jimmy on January 6, 2008

There is a really interesting dialogue that has been going on around the web lately about the one and only Twitter. Of course we all know it as our favorite micro-blogging tool and communication tool. There are so many ways to use it (Twitter, Oh How Do I Count The Ways, Twitter Tracks Iowa Caucas’s, to Tracking the San Diego Fires ). At the same time, as the uses for Twitter seems to multiply by the day, people are questioning its staying power and ability to scale, as well as the ability for it to survive without a true business model. CenterNetworks had a good post and I also had one questioning if Twitter will be able to keep up with the phenomena it has created.

I saw this post by Jesse Robins pointing to a series of YouTube videos on how to use Twitter as a disaster communications tool.

I will go back to a point I made in a earlier post. I still think Twitter needs to mature before we can get into really depending on it as this type of tool. I think the capability is there, just not ready. How many times do we pick up the phone and not get a dial tone ? Well, over the last year, our Twitter communications systems has gone dark more and more. Good promise, needs work.

That’s a great find Jimmy. I think twitter has great possibilities for other field uses too.
