I will start this post by saying that up until I saw the recent video, I was not the biggest Gary Vaynerchuk fan. Not that I did not “like” him per se, I had never really taken the time to really check him out. So while watching the video of his Web.20 Expo talk he said so many things that totally resonated with me and sparked some real emotions. This post is about a statement he made about 2 minutes in and set the tone for me.
there are way too many people doing stuff they hate …
there is no reason to do shit you hate, you can lose as much $$ being happy
He had me hooked after this. How many of you out there are toiling along in jobs that you are only doing because you are scared or intimidated to leave …. I am not judging by any means, I am one of those people. But day in and day out I see people who are simply at their jobs for the sake of having a job, they are miserable and do not do anything about it. Now I am not saying I know everyone’s situation, but I do know mine.
My job does not in anyway satisfy my passions for what I enjoy to do technologically. For years I would sit around and talk about ideas and things I would like to do, but I never did anything about it. It affected all parts of my life. I would start things outside of work but never finish, my attention bouncing form item to item yet never settling on anything. I did not decide to necessarily make a wholesale change, rather I took a step to fulfill my passion while keeping a steady day job. Gary even touches on this later in the video when he says one can do a lot of damage between 7PM and 2AM. You don’t have to make huge changes, like quitting your day job, but you can still follow your passions. You just have to make the decision and do something about it.
When I started to follow my passions outside of my day job, I found a niche and enjoyed it. I started to focus on the blog a little more and then develop the web product that I have been working on. It was hard work absolutely, but it had an impact on all areas of my life, just as being unhappy with my day job did in the opposite direction. So in the words of Gary “Stop doing shit you hate”. Below is his video and I highly recommend you take a watch, you will not be disappointed.
