DC Government, Verizon Finalize FIOS Deal

by jimmy on October 15, 2008

As we reported here previously, Verizon and the DC gov’t had reached an initial agreement to bring FIOS to the District.  However, it still required approval of the mayor and the DC Council.  It was expected by the end of the year and it actually came a little sooner.

According to this article in the Washington Post, the deal is a 15 year licensing pact to bring FIOS downtown.  Comcast has had a stranglehold on the area and this opens the door up to a little competition.  However, even though the deal is all set, Verizon still has to upgrade much of the infrastructure to fiber optic requiring lots of digging and could possible take years.

So stay tuned for any new updates.
