Event: Powerful Solutions for Small Businesses

May 14, 2008

Got tipped off on this one from the host himself, the Social Media Swami himself, Shashib .   Network Solutions in partnership with DC Media Makers is holding a pretty cool little event coming up in early June, the 4th to be exact at Busboys and Poets.

The evening will be hosted by our very own Par-Tay host Jonny Goldstein and the speaker is going to be Rohit Bhargava, author of the recently released “Personality Not Included”

Rohit is a marketer, blogger, speaker and author of the anticipated
new book, Personality Not Included — a guide for companies on
understanding and using their personality to better connect with
customers in the social media era. A founding member of the pioneering
360 Digital Influence team at Ogilvy, he writes the Influential
Marketing blog (now ranked among the top 50 marketing blogs in the
world) and is often featured as an expert in media including The Wall
Street Journal, BusinessWeek, and Fast Company. His new book,
published internationally by McGraw-Hill, has received significant
early praise and features a forward by bestselling author and
entrepreneur, Guy Kawasaki.

It is at an awesome venue and I am sure the guest list will not disappoint.  Here are the details

Where is the social web going? It’s going mobile, to geocentric services, and to open platforms. Join a community of like minded developers, social media gurus and thought leaders for an unconference to discuss the future of the social web.

We’re looking for thought leaders from DC to Boston to meet, forge relationships, and envision the future.

I am really looking forward to this one.  If you head over to the wiki page for the event, folks are dadding some really great topics for discussion sessions:

  • Google App Engine: Implications and First Impressions
  • State of the Rails: A Look at the present and Future of Rails
  • Mobile Application Development with iPhone & Android
  • What are the implications of Geo-based web applications?
  • How will Agile Development practices affect ideation and funding processes?
  • Platforms Present & Future: Facebook, OpenSocial, LinkedIn, Friendster, etc.
  • What will matter on the web a year or two from now?
  • Where will information aggregation take us?
  • Social Media is here to stay – so where will it go next?
  • How will Google keep affecting development, the web and our lives?
  • What are the next things web users will want from the web?
  • What will be the impact of future generations to the current web we know today?
  • Social Media in the workplace vs. in life
  • How the Web is being broken apart into pieces - Justin Thorp

I am really looking forward to seeing many of you there.

Another Social MatchBox in the Books

March 31, 2008

And it was a good one.  Robert and his team at JobMatchBox did an outstanding job of gathering a great mix of presenters, job seekers, socializers, etc.

It took place down at Teqcorner in the Tysons Area.  A good venue compared to some we find ourselves at.

The companies presenting got a short time to show their wares to the crowd and there was plenty of time for good ol'fashion networking.  I was fortunate to meet another bunch of people that have become Twitter followers with me recently.  And as always it was great to catch up with all.  Unfortunately I have no Keith Casey quote for everyone this week.  I will see him next week and I can only hope for a golden nugget from him then.

Anyway, this was by far one of the best community events I have been to so far.  I hope to work with Robert soon to set one up for the Maryland area and showcase some of the startups up my way.

See everyone soon.

Event: Social Media Club & WhyGoSolo

March 28, 2008

The Social Media Club here in the DC area announced their next event today and I am excited to help pass on the news.

Their April event will showcase Ann Bernard, CEO of WhyGoSolo.

Ann will show us how a local start-up company has created a social media platform that leverages the web from one click of a button. WhyGoSolo has the solution to bridge our online worlds to offline real world connections but that’s only a small part of the story. The more involved and complex social media becomes, the more critical it is to keep it simple and user-friendly for both businesses and web users to leverage. Ann will explain more about the key factors of creating a platform that is fully integrated in everyone’s online worlds and that works has a hub of information that gathers and delivers information where people want to receive it and view it.

I have come to know Ann over the last few months and am looking forward to hearing her at this event.  She has done a great job with her team to build a very innovative application that I use to make my offline connections.

Here are the details of the event:

Thursday, April 10, 2008

So I want to put the feelers out there to see who may join me for a Cherry Blossom Photowalk.  Anyone interested ?

Here is the link to the Park Service page with all the blossom information.  Forecast is for rain on Saturday, but Sunday is supposed to be nicer with a high around 60 or so.

So what do you say, you in ?  Stop by and give me a handshake over at WhyGoSolo

Event Recap: DC New Media Technology

March 19, 2008

Tonight I ventured down to the Lotus Lounge for the DC New Media Technology happy hour.  It was sponsored by Voxant and was a good time.  As usual we are starting to see the beginnings of good things happening on the area and the roots of a core of people that are here in DC to bring the area to tech life.  Nick O'Neill form The Social Times was there and we had some really good talks between us and Andrew Wright and others as to the state off affairs here in DC with regards to tech.  It was a good time.  Nick obviosuly has a lot of irons on the fire and it is always good to catch up with him.

I actaully had a bit of a "double date" thanks to our friends over at WhyGoSolo.  I had set up a listing for the event and got a "handshake" form 2 people, David Patton (@dcpatton ) and Keith Casey (look Keith No Quote !!).  I tried to keep them both unaware I was 2timing them, but in the end they found out about each other :(  Needless to say, I went home alone :)

There was one guy, whose card I did not get, but is a young man form Boston who was down to check out the DC startup scene.  Of course Nick and I gave him an earful and I think he was kind of impressed with what is happening in DC.  My friend Jeremy Epstein of Microsoft was there fresh off the birth of his little girl and enjoying the web social scene.

I was also fortunate to finally get a chance to meet up with Bob and his wife Julliane (hope i got the speeling right) of JobMatchBox.com.  He has another SocialMatchBox coming up next week (more to come on this).  We will be looking to co sponsor  some things in the Rockville area to get some of those startups out into the light as well with JobMatchBox in the near future.
The events keep getting bigger and better and is a great way to get out and meetup with some great people.  See you all at the next one !
