Event Recap: DC New Media Technology

March 19, 2008

Tonight I ventured down to the Lotus Lounge for the DC New Media Technology happy hour.  It was sponsored by Voxant and was a good time.  As usual we are starting to see the beginnings of good things happening on the area and the roots of a core of people that are here in DC to bring the area to tech life.  Nick O'Neill form The Social Times was there and we had some really good talks between us and Andrew Wright and others as to the state off affairs here in DC with regards to tech.  It was a good time.  Nick obviosuly has a lot of irons on the fire and it is always good to catch up with him.

I actaully had a bit of a "double date" thanks to our friends over at WhyGoSolo.  I had set up a listing for the event and got a "handshake" form 2 people, David Patton (@dcpatton ) and Keith Casey (look Keith No Quote !!).  I tried to keep them both unaware I was 2timing them, but in the end they found out about each other :(  Needless to say, I went home alone :)

There was one guy, whose card I did not get, but is a young man form Boston who was down to check out the DC startup scene.  Of course Nick and I gave him an earful and I think he was kind of impressed with what is happening in DC.  My friend Jeremy Epstein of Microsoft was there fresh off the birth of his little girl and enjoying the web social scene.

I was also fortunate to finally get a chance to meet up with Bob and his wife Julliane (hope i got the speeling right) of JobMatchBox.com.  He has another SocialMatchBox coming up next week (more to come on this).  We will be looking to co sponsor  some things in the Rockville area to get some of those startups out into the light as well with JobMatchBox in the near future.
The events keep getting bigger and better and is a great way to get out and meetup with some great people.  See you all at the next one !

Event Recap: MashMeet DC Remix

March 6, 2008

I know this post is a little late, some of us have to work … LOL just teasing, but seriously.  Much of the local DC tech scene was out last night in advance of the mass exodus of SXSW’ers.  We were all at the MashMeet DC Remix event help at Ogilvy Public Relations in DC.  As usual it was great to see old friends and meet some new ones.

I will say the setup was a little difficult with demonstrations trying to go on with no sound system and much of the crowd being told to keep the noise down so the demonstrators could be heard … but otherwise it was a great event.  I did not get to see much of the demos, but I do know that our local favorite news sharing site, Mixx, presented and I heard some good talk about Kluster.com.

There was a good mix of people there.  I got to finally check off a few real world introductions to some fellow dc twitter’s like Peter Corbett of iStrategyLabs and and Keith Casey programmer extraordinaire  of the WhyGoSolo Team.  I met up with the social media swami Shashi B and rode the metro into town to gather pre mashMeet with a group to include Aaron Brazell, Ann Bernbard, Andrew Wright, Keith Casey, and Jonathon Trenn.

It was an interesting event, I got to follow up on some chatter about the post I wrote about DC area startups developing a complex, my subsequent appearance on teh District of Corruption with Aaron and Geoff Livingston, and Aaron’s follow up post about it.  It generated a lot of talk and honestly that is a good thing.  People are weighing in on both sides of the fence, but in the end I think we all agree, we are onto something special here with a great group of people and I am happy to be able to call them my friends and be able to help them out as much as I can.

It is great to see these events continue to grow and grow in popularity here and we are totally looking forward to the ones in the near furture, like PodCampDC and BlogPotomac.  Events like these will continue to bring together all of the great people and make our little town here special.  There are so many poepl starting to attend, I always leave wishing I had talked to a few more people, but that is what the next one is for.  See you around town.

EVENT: Design Talks Conference

February 2, 2008

I saw news of this event, Design Talks Conference, over at Justin Thorp’s blog.  It looks pretty cool, and better yet, its local, yeahhh.  Anyway on February 29th Viget Labs is hosting this day long conference. Organizers are Jackson Wilkinson and Mixx’s Jason Garber.

The DC Design Talks are a one day conference for web designers. They’re an affordable, single-day conference featuring some of the best speakers and practitioners of design in the DC region. They’re part one of the DC Talks series.

Its only $35, so you really cant afford not to go if you are a local designer.  This appears to be the first in a 3 part series.  The next will be DC Dev Talks in the spring and then DC Strategy Talks in the summer.  Make sure to let us know how it all goes.
